Thus I wrote
Of Darkness and of Light
To share with You
In Black and in White

Thus I Wrote was inspired by Nietszche and his book Thus Spoke Zarathustra not for the content but for the title.

This blog contains stuff that I have thought about and want to write about – relationships, philosophy and the rest of life’s rich tapestry. I find it is a good way of understanding my emotions and coming to acceptance of some questions that simply have no answer. I can’t understand what’s on the surface…I find that I need to dig deep  and then chisel away at what I find to reach some understanding and acceptance. (It does drive some of my family and friends a bit mad as I do live a lot in my head!).

Why poetry?…well I find that I never use one word when ten will do in real life and so I use poetry to try to keep my communication succinct…it is less spontaneous and when you see a post appear, I may have being working on it for a while. But hopefully it clarifies what I am trying to say, to me and to you. :-). I did not plan it this way…it just evolved.

You may find (if you look back through my archive) a few versions of a particular poem or song…that is because I have revised it and then re-issued a new version rather than redo the original. I find, especially in poems that I use for songs, that when I am singing, different words come to mind, ones that sound better or help to explain better what I am saying. I don’t work to a timetable and I tend to go in cycles of writing and then creating music and songs and so there is inevitably long gaps between my writing. (BTW – For writing, I started out just using various notes packages (and then cutting and pasting onto WordPress) or writing on WordPress direct but moved onto the Ulysses app which is much more sophisticated. I now mostly create on Ulysses and I export onto WordPress when finished.)

I have created three music albums: I Caught a Butterfly – 10 songs and Everything must End – 11 songs and I Heard The Skylark Singing – 8 songs (with more to some) on Bandcamp and have added them to the Songs section. I have created these songs over the last few years from poetry created on this Blog.  I’ve done all the recording and production myself and tried to keep it consistent. However as I have being learning song composition, recording and production (Garageband and then Logic Pro) during the project and as this project has taken a few years it is inevitable that there will be some inconsistencies which I hope will be overlooked. I’m not expecting to give up my day job just yet :-)…it’s just a great way of presenting my poetry and songs in a simple way to paint an overall journey or story. If you find that some of it resonates with you then it would be great to hear from you.

They say a picture paints a thousand words and I try to pick some painting or photograph to complement the writing or sometimes its the other way round. I have chosen a black and white theme because I love black and white photography and I love the style of the 50s and the black and white films of that era. Remember Roman Holiday? – Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck never looked so lovely. I use Adobe Photoshop to edit and create new artwork as I feel the need.

I have kept my name private mainly because I don’t want immediate friends and family being embarassed and I don’t want to be inhibited about what I write. (I hope that this does not put you off). Some background:- I am living in London, England of Irish Nationality (think Joyce, Beckett, Yeats, Wilde, Shaw, Synge, Stoker (Some say that in Gaelic, the phrase “Droch Ola” (think: Dracula) means bad blood.), U2, Van Morrison. I’m a man with a longer road behind than in front of me but who wants to live life in every breath. Life is change and life is difficult but we get to share it and that is the joy because then “the road will rise to meet you” as in the traditional Gaelic blessing.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I feel blessed to be alive and want to give as much as I can because “when you stop giving,  you stop living” or “you’re never alone when you’ve something to share”.

The  arbitrary picture I have chosen to represent me is the wonderful Paul Newman in the film Hombre and example of The Loner that I wrote about in my blog. There is no deep meaning to it as it was a spur of the moment thing.

Any feedback would be most welcome but I will write on regardless as I am doing it as a creative release, because I enjoy it and everything else is a bonus. But… please do follow, like, comment…:-) as it is wonderful to connect and be acknowledged.

  1. Loud

I’m scared to be cold but indifferent to be loud.
I don’t want to be part of a fleeting crowd.
