I wonder what it means
Day after day
What I do now
Day after day

I’ve no real plan
Step after step
Moving forward
Step after step

Slowly a form arises
From the steps
The mist of meaning
From the steps

Can I accept a part
In this play
Yet play it well
Each & every day

I see others struggle
Struggle for love
Struggle for money
But it’s never enough

Yet in their struggle
Is their meaning
Their distraction
From their ending

The more I know
The more I’m apart
The distance between
The head and the heart.

I was an adolescent once
A time of transition
Of great learning
Of experimentation
Of new experiences

I was an adolescent once
I found romance
And new beginnings
I created something
That became my life

Career & relationships
Children and marriages
Houses and parties
Family and friends
Growth and change

Now another transition
Again everything is new
More baggage now
Create meaning & joy
Create a new life.

The Void

leave a comment »

There is no agreed meaning to life…
There is a void.

There is no agreed measure
No agreed target
No agreed acceptable end…
There is a void.

It is left to us
To create our own meaning…
To try to fill the void.

The pursuit of growth
Of wealth, of power
Became a dominant meaning
Within our culture.
Those who have want more
Those who have not aspire…
To try to fill the void.

Over millennia, humankind evolved
To cover the earth
Until certain European countries
Acquired power & wealth
By colonisation of peoples
By breaking their resistance
Through efficient
Killing from a distance…
To try to fill the void.

Religion and science were used by the powerful
To enable and justify the genocide.
Laws were created to control the weak
Whilst the powerful lied
To grow and maintain their privilege
And so the wealth of other civilisations was pillaged…
To try to fill the void.

To colonise the rest of America
American colonists went on
Through genocide and theft
Of the indigenous population.
So also in Africa
So also in Australia…
All trying to fill the void.

In the 20th century WW1, WW2,
Some recognition of what was lost
Lions led by donkeys
Hiroshima & the Holocaust,
Trying to fill the void.

From a distance,
Living standards have increased
Humanity has evolved
Violence has decreased
But dark actions of the past are hiding
Under the veil of progress.
Were those civilisations given a choice?
In how we reached such progress?
Could we have chosen a different path
To reach such progress?
Did they share equally
In the benefits of such progress?
All countries, peoples and tribes
Want the freedom to choose
Their own unique way
To fill the void.

Those once persecuted
May persecute in time
See the Middle East
Israel & Palestine
We humans have good
But also bad inside
We must find better ways
To fill the void.

We are Optimistic

leave a comment »

We are optimistic
We believe
In a better world than is
In hope
In an arc
Towards justice
And a different way
To measure effectiveness
We are optimistic

We are optimistic
We see the same void
But we choose
A different way to fill it
We accept competition
And cooperation within it
An endless circle
We end and begin it
We are optimistic

We are optimistic
We believe in evolution
In constant growth and change
In truth and beauty
In a form that follows function
In everything interconnected
In decisions that consider everything
In accepting our small place
In the chaos of everything
In acquiring knowledge
And passing it down the line
In joining hands and surfing
On the ocean of time
We are optimistic

It worries me
This lack of meaning
It frustrates me
This lack of meaning
Is every action?
Just a distraction?
From my reality?
My lack of meaning?

I know I
I know I’m blessed
Some needs met
More than the rest
But will this stuff?
Ever be enough?
To keep my head?
Above the rest?

Sun Rise

leave a comment »

On a wild horse
Not broken yet
I’m thrown about
Holding on yet
No purpose, stuck
No direction, stuck
Can’t ride

In the darkness
From the deep they rise
I see the ghosts
I hear their cries
Then I hold your hand
I see your smiles
I hear the ocean
I see the sun rise

Black Silk

Never Too Dark To See

This human condition
In which we live
In which we know
This absurd condition

We watch ourselves grow
Live, love and decay
We hear echoes of eternity
In a dark universe of stars
We wonder, we cry out
For a father or mother
A creator to give us meaning
Someone to make us feel less alone

We push our boundaries
We compete for our space
We seek some control
For the world to remember us here
And so the river runs
Ever onward
And so the current pushes us
Ever onward

Now I’m alone at night
In the darkness
I feel the earth turn
Beneath me
I’m fading, fading into silk
Black silk

My World

leave a comment »

I was born naked
Naked in a frightening world
A world without obvious meaning
A world insecure
A world with no direction
A world of swirling forms
A world of noise and uncertainty

And so I built a house
To make sense of the world
And it became my world
With pillars strong
And I found others
Who shared my world
And together we built a city
To protect us
To give us meaning
To protect us from storms

But one day a big storm came
That knocked a pillar of my house down
That rocked my world
That separated me from the others
That forced me to look at the truth
To look at the darkness beyond my house
To look at the darkness beyond my city
And I saw death
I saw no obvious meaning
I saw I was alone
I saw the terrifying responsibility
Of my freedom
I saw the terrifying responsibility
Of finding my own way

For a while I went mad
And I sought distraction
In drink, in sex, in recreation
But, over time, came acceptance
Over time,  I found my new niche
Over time, I found a way to compete and serve
Over time, I built a new house
In a new city
With bigger windows
Over time, I let more light in.

The Grand Game

leave a comment »

You were out on the street with me
Full of passionate conviction
You made me realise then
That I’d let the darkness in
That I’d let ignorant intensity
Punch me in the heart
I worried the centre couldn’t hold
I worried things were falling apart

We try to make the future
Through the limits of our own haze
And it becomes our faith
And we push it in our tribal ways
But when I feel lonely
I need to hear you call my name
Then I ache for the things I love
In this grand game

And I feel so small
As I stare up at the stars
As I feel the sand shifting
Oh but I remember we’ve travelled, so far
And I really don’t mind losing
As long as the reason is sound
And we don’t lose the wisdom we’ve found
As this grand game, cycles round

Now when everything is slipping
And I feel the cold wind start to blow
I remember sometimes things fall apart
So better things may fall together and hold
Inequality shines through
Beneath the ignorance and the lies
But false promises won’t do us no no good
In this grand game

And I feel so small
As I stare up at the stars
As I feel the sand shifting
Oh but I remember, we’ve travelled so far
And I really don’t mind losing
As long as the reason is sound
And we don’t lose the wisdom we’ve found
As this grand game cycles round

Now it’s all fading away
We compete well as we must
But we’ve much more in common
Than that which divides us
There’s always room in the dark
As in between changes we’re drifting
To the light of the moon
Your lovely face I’m lifting
